7 Key Practices to Restoring Balance

The holiday season is a great time for restoring balance. A key life lesson for many of us is finding balance. With more and more demands placed on our time, our lives can feel out of balance. Your body will tell you that it’s time to stop and restore the balance or your health may take strain. What do we mean by finding balance? Some may think of ‘the balancing act to get things done’, or the ‘balancing act of spinning all those plates’ or ‘work-life balance’ or ‘all in good balance’. However, it’s more than that. Balance is really a matter of spiritual evolution. When we find the balance point of all our experiences (resisting nothing and chasing nothing), we find a gateway to freedom.

So how do we really find balance and why is it important?

Here I share 7 key practices to finding the balance point; the point of liberation and transformation into a new way of being, that I hope will inspire you to bring balance and well-being into your own life.

7 Key Practices to Restoring Balance

Balancing Doing with Being

The classic Yin Yang balance; balancing action, activity and business with rest, recuperation, sleep and nurturing. This is where we often get things out of balance, work pressure and family responsibilities being the main culprits. All disease is imbalance. Your body can tell you when you get out of balance, by creating stiffness, aches and pains, often on one side more than the other, indicating a classic yin/yang imbalance in the body. We just have to tune in, feel and listen. All this doing needs to be balanced with just being – enjoying life. Meditation as a regular practice can be a trusted friend here. Meditation is a treat, not a chore – a practice of non-doing, of un-doing, of just being – a practice aimed at restoring balance.

Balancing Giving with Receiving

Why does it seem easier to give than to receive? Could you allow yourself to receive? Receiving without an ‘Ah you shouldn’t have…’. Receiving graciously with just a ‘Thank you’, allowing others the pleasure of doing something for you. Balancing the give-and-take in relationships, between what’s good for us personally and what’s good for the needs of those we care about, is an essential fine art and one you owe to yourself.

Balancing Others with Self

Many of us have been raised with the idea of putting other people first yet its a misconception that is misunderstood and mis-practised. When you feel duty-bound to do more for others or want to please others at the expense of yourself, you can create energetic imbalances which can leave you feeling resentful and drained. No one is more important than anyone else, as we are all equal in value. Caroline Myss (1997), in her discussion of healthy self-esteem, refers to two spiritual laws: ‘honouring one another’ and ‘honouring oneself’. These two laws are equal in importance and we are to balance how we practice and apply them. Through the practice of balance, we assert healthy boundaries.

Balancing Past and Future with the Present Moment

We create anxiety and stress through fear-based thoughts – regretting past events and thinking too far ahead, anticipating undesired future outcomes. When we come into the present moment, release takes place. Here nothing needs to be achieved or controlled. The present moment is completely free from stress. Here we can open up to the joy of life, it is also expansive, and time stands still. In the present, you can just be, flow and create.

Balancing Planning with Flowing

Planning serves its purpose, and it’s good to plan your day and scan your week ahead. Set your intentions and then let go of the importance of it. It’s a strange paradox, yet it keeps any self-investment out of it. Set your aim and then flow with the river of life and as much as we may want to pursue our own agendas, and sometimes it’s very important to do so, equally if we stay mindful of the bigger picture this can help us to find a good balance. Flowing opens us up to our inner guidance and life’s surprising synchronicities through which things fall in place in magical ways.

Balancing Head with Heart

Practically all inner conflict is a conflict between the head and heart; being in two minds about what to do and what’s important to us. Too often we overthink things whilst dismissing that wise intuitive inner voice only to regret it later. Sounds familiar doesn’t it? So, the ultimate balancing act is balancing the logical thinking head with the intuitive heart; the analytical conscious mind with the creative, emotional unconscious mind; the controlling ego self with the comfortable and ever-expansive true self. This integration brings the minds into oneness, wholeness and peace. Then the minds can work together in synergy, harmony and balance. This is true healing; the healing that brings transformation and enlightenment.

Balancing Heaven with Earth

In the body, the lower Chakras are more Yin, feminine and earthy and are about our grounding, our connection with the Earth, our physical and emotional health. The higher Chakras are more Yang, masculine and heavenly; being about the mind, the higher mind and spirit. Regardless of our gender, we each have both yin and yang energies in us and our life lesson is to bring them into balance inside of us. The Heart Chakra is the midway point, the natural place of balance and harmony. The heart connects and unites heaven and earth in the body. The heart is the gateway. When we slip into this balance-point and reside more in the heart, a gateway opens; a gateway to a more magical life where things flow and work out miraculously and you are liberated to evolve more into your expansive, magnificent and infinitely creative true self.

When we are in balance within ourselves we embody the knowledge of the universe, and we can expand beyond measure.

Karma is about Balanced Experience

Karma is the result of the duality that we experience in the 3-dimensional world where we learn through opposites – through struggles, tests and challenges. As we move into unity consciousness, we move beyond duality and learning through karma. When we integrate all opposites in us and bring ourselves into harmony and balance (something that is entirely possible now as it’s part of the shift we’re making), we can finally move beyond the wheel of karma. Then we are free to open up to the joy of life and learn through curiosity, creativity, love and positive experiences. The Foundations of Mastery, 12 Steps to a Fulfilled Life, expands on this theme as an essential purpose of this current life on Earth during this time of a shift into a new way of being.

Signs and Symbolism

Inspiration from the Natural World

The universe communicates and teaches all the time. Just stop, take time to tune in, listen, notice and heed the signs.

Once, during a time of loss and transformation, I searched for a sign and a dragonfly came. He hovered and flew about for a while, so I could observe it. I noticed how it flies and shimmers iridescently. I realised that the dragonfly has something profound to teach. The other-worldliness of this beautiful creature inspired the cover design of my new book, The Foundations of Mastery, 12 Steps to a Fulfilled Life.

Like the butterfly, the dragonfly is associated with light, transformation, and personal growth. Dragonflies change direction quickly, and seemingly fly without any effort at all. So, we can learn adaptability, lightheartedness, and flexibility from this magical creature.

In the shamanic tradition, dragonfly as a totem animal represents prosperity, good luck, strength, peace, harmony and purity. The dragonfly, in almost every part of the world symbolises change, change in yourself, and self-realisation. If you see dragonflies often, you have been called to look within and see what areas you could possibly improve on, and what you can shed in order to bring more light and freedom into your life. Dragonflies may also point to a great metamorphosis coming up in your life. Pay attention to the animals and signs around you. The dragonfly symbolises great transformation and personal growth, and invites you to dive into your emotions for fuller understanding of yourself and your personal journey.

The dragonfly is unique as it starts life in the water, climbs out its environment, and grows wings to fly. These are the kinds of changes that we can aspire to when we contemplating the miraculous dragonfly. The dragonfly encourages you to remember that you too can rise above it all and make your life more then you ever dreamed. You can make it a magical masterpiece.

Dragonflies have flown the Earth for 300 million years. A dragonfly symbolises our ability to overcome times of hardship. They remind us to take time to reconnect with our own strength, courage and happiness. The dragonfly has a short life and helps us be mindful of each precious moment; to value the opportunities to live, love and grow each day.

Dragonflies are said to have once been dragons from another world, so when you see one, their magic, power and mastery is right beside you.

The Magic of the Unconscious Mind

In Transformational Therapies we work with the subtle, yet powerful and magical Unconscious Mind. We can experience its intuitive nudges as a ‘gut-feel’ that comes to you out of nowhere and it’s worth tuning into its subtle guidance and inner wisdom. The language of your Unconscious Mind is more symbolic. It uses and responds to symbolism, which is why dreams, imagination and visualisation are so powerful. Learn more about working with your Unconscious Mind, tuning into its subtle nudges to become whole and create magic in your life here.
