Self-Mastery – Mastering Your Emotions

Last month we started our first Self-Mastery Meditation Course. It’s an exciting journey for me for alongside it, I’m writing my second book: Self-mastery, a 12 Step Journey to a Fulfilled Life. It’s a journey through the 12th Chakra-system and this month we explore mastering our energy and our emotions.

The foundational principles of mindfulness, which is practiced widely now, has its origin in Buddhism. These principles, although challenging, can be very helpful in broadening our awareness and observing our habitual emotional and mental patterns. They can also help us to remain non-reactive in situations that are emotionally charged, offering us a way to remain calm and clear.

1. Non-judging

Our tendency to label or categorise events, people and experiences as good or bad, liking or disliking, exciting or boring, fair or unfair or can do or can’t do it, is ego-induced arrogance. When we stop labelling or judging, we can become the impartial witness and see everything just as a learning experience. Monitor that critical voice in your head and stop judging yourself. When you do, you will stop judging others and they will stop judging you. Work on replacing the critical voice with a compassionate voice that gently and lovingly furthers your growth.

2. Patience

Be patient with your own experience – with what is happening in this moment – instead of rushing to the next. Live in the here and now. Patience is a form of wisdom. Let everything unfold in its own time. The butterfly can’t be helped out of a chrysalis.

3. Acceptance

Acceptance doesn’t mean liking or giving up or satisfied, it just means non-resistance and accepting what is right now as a starting point. Acceptance is a precondition for healing. Acceptance brings peace. Embrace acceptance and compassion as opportunities for Mastery.

4. Non-attachment

We create our own suffering by holding onto things or wanting things to be different from what they are. We want to hang onto pleasure and avoid pain. We hang onto summer and the holiday and dreading winter and going back to work. Just let your experience be as it is. Notice and let go. Let go of the attachment to specific outcomes as well. That is a habit of control. Accept and let go of everything. Let go like you do when you go to sleep at night. Then you can start the new day afresh and free.

5. Letting go

Set the intention to let it go. Releasing brings relief and makes space for joy to return.
Let go emotionally; of any unsettling feelings and mentally; of excessive thoughts. Let go of the need to control too. A major source of suffering is wanting things ‘my way’. Everything happens for your own learning and growth. Let go of the importance of other people’s opinions too. They are just opinions, not truths. When you attach too much value to their opinions, you are giving your power away. Liberate yourself from others opinions and give yourself the permission to just be your true self. That brings freedom and happiness.

6. Non-doing

Our continuous busy-ness can create stress and overthinking. Our minds become cluttered, forgetful and confused. Taking time to just be, can be very nourishing and refreshing. It is like a reset for the mind and brings much needed clarity. With the left thinking brain quieting, the right creative brain can open up. Daydreaming is a great way of just being. As you daydream, you just follow the natural trail of your thoughts as they flow into new creative ideas and perspectives. In the relaxed state of daydreaming, the mind opens up to the subtlety of intuition, inspiration and inner wisdom – the seat of creativity.

7. Connectedness

Awareness of our intrinsic wholeness & interconnectedness, offers us a new approach to emotions. Emotions are contagious and it’s easy to feel others fear, sadness and anger. Equally, when you are calm, at peace, loving and joyful, you bring a beautiful gift of upliftment to others.

8. Wakefulness

Present moment awareness is The Great Practice. Most people go through life and their daily routine in a trance, asleep, unaware, on automatic pilot. When we are present in the moment, we are truly alive and awakened. Through wakefulness you can bring continuous conscious awareness to:
Your Perceptions: Our reality is just a perception coloured in by our beliefs, values, memories and experiences. We always perceive subjectively. What am I not seeing?
Your Beliefs: are self-fulfilling prophesies. Our beliefs create our realities. Do I believe I can do it?
Your Thoughts: Be mindful of your self-talk. As you think so you create. Are my thoughts helpful to me?
The Mind-body Link: Mind and body is one interconnected whole. Pain and emotions are messages from your unconscious mind. Unresolved suppressed emotions can cause dis-ease in the body. What is my body and my feelings telling me?
Your Responsibility: Am I taking full responsibility for everything happening in my life?
Cause and Effect: Am I acting or reacting? Am I a victim or a creator? Embrace your creative energy. What am I creating?

9. Daily Reflection

Every experience, even the challenges and so-called mistakes, have been part of your growth. A key practice in Timeline Therapy™ is to reflect on the learning experiences of past events. You can do your own daily reflection by asking yourself:
What was good about today?
What was not so good?
What am I learning from it?
What will I do different next time?
Then after your reflection, let it go. Sometimes you may have to bring compassion and forgiveness to yourself and others. You will feel a weight lifting and the release can be very healing.
